Lord Horatio Nelson- large plaster bust
Lord Horatio Nelson
An imposing, museum-scale portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson, originally sculpted in 2026 by Miles Gregory and individually cast in plaster at Aylsham House, North Walsham, Norfolk.
The sculpture is modelled on the celebrated portrait by Lemuel Francis Abbott, painted around 1800 from studies made during sittings with Nelson in 1797, while he was recovering from the loss of his right arm. It depicts Nelson in his rear-admiral’s uniform, wearing his decorations, with his empty right sleeve pinned across his chest.
The Abbott portrait
Modelled on the celebrated portrait by Lemuel Francis Abbott, the bust reproduces Nelson’s naval uniform, his empty right sleeve pinned across his chest, his orders and decorations, and the remarkable diamond chelengk adorning his bicorne hat — a gift from the Sultan of Turkey in recognition of his victory at the Nile.
The sculpture also has a particular connection to its place of making. Aylsham House stands just a hundred metres from Paston College, where Nelson was educated before joining the Royal Navy in 1771. It is likely he would have walked past the house while at Paston. More than 250 years later, his portrait is once again being made in North Walsham.
Standing 64cm tall, the bust is cast in high-quality Herculite plaster, carefully finished by hand and lightly treated with linseed oil to lend warmth to the surface and bring out its sculptural detail. Its substantial scale and historical character make it a striking centrepiece for a library, study or drawing room.
